Travel Decoded is all about helping people navigate the increasingly complex world of modern travel with confidence. While no piece of gear can eliminate every travel hiccup, the right tools can reduce friction, improve organization, and make the journey more enjoyable from departure to arrival. Luggage

Nomatic Carry-On Classic – Indestructible, very smooth roll, built-in zipper locks, and a form factor that’s just different from every other black carry-on (even though it’s a black carry-on).And to be honest, this is the only suitcase I really use. I’ve got others, but I always come back to this one.

Backpacks

Evergoods Civic Travel Bag (26L) – The perfect travel backpack size. Great organization, very comfortable harness, luggage pass-through, water bottle pockets, protected laptop compartment – it’s got everything I need. It also comes in 20L and 35L sizes, but for me the 26L is the sweet spot.Trakke Bannoch – I was so disappointed when Trakke closed their doors in 2025, but excited to see Alpkit acquire the brand and keep the tradition alive later that year. My Bannoch just gets better and better the more I use it. I love the waxed canvas – especially in Port. And there’s something so satisfying about a Cobra buckle.Aer GoPack 2 - This is my favorite packable backpack. It's super light and packs into almost any kind of space. But unlike a lot of lightweight packables, this one can be loaded out and is still really comfortable. The big expandable front storage is extremely useful for bulky things.To be honest, I have far too many backpacks, including ones from Bellroy, Goruck, Bedouin, Alpaka, Topo Designs, Mission Workshop, Dan Matsuda, Osprey, and Mystery Ranch to name a few. Slings & Crossbody Bags

Alpaka Flow Satchel (4L) – I love how this lays when it’s on. Holds a ton without ever feeling bulky. And the water bottle compartment is fantastic.Bellroy Lite Sling – When I need to carry a lot, this is my go-to. 7L capacity, super lightweight, lays flat when not stuffed but has great expansion when packed out. And I love their clay color.Alpaka Elements Tech Case Max – When I need a lot of organization, this is the sling I reach for. So many dividers, pockets, and slips. It's a great way to stay organized on the go. And the strap is removable if you’re just looking to transport your tech gear.Chrome Kadet – When I want to look much cooler than I am, I'll grab my 9L Kadet in bright red. That classic Chrome seatbelt buckle with that long and lean form factor just stands out anywhere.And similar to the backpacks, I have a lot of slings and crossbody bags.

Pouches & Organizers

Evergoods Civic Access Pouch 1L (CAP1) – It just holds so much in a very satisfying form factor. The organization is terrific, and I rarely go anywhere without it.Alpaka Elements Tech Case Mini – This is where all of my cords, cables, charger plugs, and little gadgets go. It also has a strap in case you want to use it as a small sling bag (although I keep in in pouch mode).Tom Bihn Ghost Whale Organizer Pouch – with four sizes to choose from, you’ll find one or just about any need. And I just like the aesthetics of the curved zipper and fun colors. Super well made, and you can clip them onto anything.Matador Speed Stash – This pouch has such a specific use case. It mounts onto your backpack strap so that it’s always in reach when you’re carrying a pack. It’s a great way to keep things out of your pockets but still keep them close at-hand.

Accessories

Alpaka Hub Sunglasses Pouch – Alpaka’s Hub system allows for different accessories to be attached and swapped out of their many bags. But this one is by far my favorite as someone who wears prescription glasses AND prescription sunglasses, and is constantly switching back and forth. This soft padded pouch hangs from my backpack strap anytime I’m going out and about.Matador Flatpak Toiletry Bottles – Super-light, easy to fill with all the liquids, and they pack totally flat when empty. And you can write on the tags to identify what’s inside.
